New Shoes

24 May 05.

This is Design.

Did you ever notice, while shopping for shoes, that all the ones they have out on display are in size 5, or possibly 6. Never much larger than that. You see a pair you really like and ask the shopkeep if you can try on a pair in your size (9 or 10). When she arrived out with them you suddenly find that they have mutated into some kind of monstrosity. The extra couple of inches has warped their contours and dimensions, and suddenly they don’t look so hot anymore. Kind of reminds you of liquid layouts? I’d guess that shoe designers design at one size and then have to stretch or compress it to accomadate all feet. But it’s not necessarily going to work for all shoe designs. They still do it anyway. Have you ever asked for a runner in a ten and been told they don’t make them in that size, because it destroys the shape of the shoe? Me neither.

So I’m trying on a pair downstairs in this shop, and the girl just gives me the two shoes and walks upstairs. The usual experience is more along the lines of them grudgingly handing you the right shoe and then standing within two feet (get it? two feet) from you while you pull it on and hobble around the shopfloor with odd footwear. I tried them both on and walked around the empty shop admiring myself in the mirrors for about three minutes before she came back. It was refreshingly trusting. Maybe that’s why I bought the shoes.

  1. This happens to me every time with sneakers. I see a nice-looking pair on the shelf, but the salesperson brings out a couple of canoe-sized logs. Someone needs to design shoes with large-footed guys in mind.

  2. Well I usualy look at the shoes and think the same.
I ask if they have size 12 and they usualy come back and say “Oh sorry we only have them in size 8”.
Like if it was a t-shirt and they only had one colour. You know they say it in a way that cant you have size 8 instead, there the same shoe design so why cant you wear them?

They also look crap too you know like clown shoes.I shouldnt have such big feet, I think thats what the shops are trying to say.
